What is STI screening?

Our drop-in STI screening service is private and confidential, and it’s conducted by a Nurse in Residence (part of the Nurse on Campus program offered by the UBC Student Health Service).

This screening is available to students without symptoms, as part of a proactive approach to sexual health and wellbeing, and it can detect Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C.

Routine STI screening is recommended every 3 to 12 months.

However, remember that exposures may not show up immediately if screening soon after an exposure.

How does STI screening work?

No appointment is required. Simply drop in during any of the scheduled times. Nurses will see students on a first come, first served basis.

Upon arrival, you will provide your personal health number/card and a piece of photo ID.

You will spend about 20 minutes with a nurse who will have a private and confidential conversation with you. Based on this conversation, you may be invited to provide a specimen, such as a swab or urine sample, for testing and you may be given a lab requisition for bloodwork at the UBC Outpatient Lab.

If you test positive for an STI, UBC’s Student Health Service will contact you a few days after your screening.
