Eating made easy
Never worry about cooking or cleaning dirty dishes! Residents in Totem Park, Place Vanier and Orchard Commons purchase a convenient meal plan, valid at more than 30 places to eat. Each residence has a large-scale residence dining room where students gather throughout the day to recharge and socialize. Our professional chefs offer a variety of tasty, nutritious choices for breakfast lunch and dinner, including homemade soups, full-service grill, salad bar, fresh deli sandwiches, made-to-order omelets, pizza, healthy shakes, and much more. Many ingredients, including organic, are sourced directly from UBC Farm. The dining rooms are open to all UBC students and the public, but Totem Park, Place Vanier and Orchard Commons residents enjoy discounted prices and no tax on purchases.
Choose a plan
Meal plan fees vary depending on the size of plan you choose. It is a declining balance plan, which means funds are deposited into an account and deducted as purchases are made. Students can choose a plan size:
- Minimum Plan—for students with smaller appetites who dine on campus occasionally on weekends.
- Regular Plan—for students with average appetites who dine on campus about every other weekend.
- Varsity Plan—for students with hearty appetites who dine on campus most weekends.
- Single Term—only valid for students who have signed a single term Residence Contract.
Not sure how much you’ll eat while at university? We recommend monitoring your purchases and account balance closely in early to mid-September, determine how much you’re spending per day, and calculate the approximate cost by the end of the academic year. You may choose to:
- Select a different type of plan before the second payment is due (late September).
- Add more money throughout the school year without changing your selection.
- Transfer the balance at the end of the term or review options for a potential refund.
Understanding meal versus flex dollars
Meal plans have a combination of Meal Dollars (about 80 percent) and Flex Dollars (about 20 percent).
What are Meal Dollars?
- Used for food and beverage purchases at residence dining rooms. Totem Park, Place Vanier and Orchard Commons residents get special pricing and no tax. All other patrons pay retail prices and tax in the dining rooms.
- 5 percent discount on food and non-alcoholic beverages at other UBC Food Services retail locations, except residence convenience stores.
- When Meal Dollars run out, Flex Dollars will automatically transfer into basic Meal Dollars to make purchases (as long as the plan is paid in full).
What are Flex Dollars?
- Used for purchases at residence convenience stores at retail prices (subject to tax).
- Valid for alcoholic beverages at Sage, Triple-O’s and The Point Grill (subject to tax).
- Valid for food and beverages from campus vending machines and campus partner eateries—Booster Juice, Domino’s Pizza, The Pita Pit, and many others.
- When Flex Dollars run out, add more (as long as your plan is paid in full) using the Online Service Centre or visit Student Housing and Hospitality Services.

When basic Meal Dollars run out, Flex Dollars will automatically transfer into basic Meal Dollars to make purchases (as long as the plan is paid in full). Residents can add Flex Dollars to their account any time using the Online Service Centre or visit Student Housing and Hospitality Services.

Sort it Out!
Sustainability is a shared value in residence. All food services locations are equipped with clearly marked sorting stations for food scraps, compost, recycling, plastics, and other waste items.
UBC Food Services hires students to work part-time at campus retail food units. Working up to 14 hours per week is especially convenient for students who live in residence. Positions include counter service, basic food preparation, cashier, dishwasher, assistant cook and general workers.
Lost & stolen student cards
Once you have received your new card, visit a UBC Food Services location on campus and ask the cashier to swipe your new card—which puts your new UBC Card information on the system. Then, activate your new card in the Online Service Centre.
Transfers & refunds
Options if you have leftover basic Meal Dollars:
1. Do nothing. Around May 8, 2017, basic Meal Dollars are automatically transferred into a Carryover Plan—an account specifically reserved for Residence Meal Plan balances. It works similar to the UBCcard Plan.
2. Request to transfer onto a Gift Card—valid for regular priced food and non-alcoholic beverages at UBC Food Services locations. $25 administration fee will be deducted from the balance. Deadline: May 8, 2017.
Options if you have leftover Flex Dollars:
1. Do nothing. Around May 8, 2017, Flex Dollars are automatically transferred into a UBCcard Plan.
2. Request to transfer onto a Gift Card—valid for regular priced food and non-alcoholic beverages at UBC Food Services locations. $25 administration fee will be deducted from the balance. Deadline: May 8, 2017. For more information about Gift Cards, click here.
3. Request a refund. $25 administration fee will be deducted from the balance. Deadline: May 8, 2017.
Cancellation of the Residence Contract is also a cancellation of the Residence Meal Plan. Students cannot cancel or opt out of the Residence Meal Plan alone. Policies and procedures are clearly defined in your Residence Contract.
